CURRIE – Donald Ray, 82, Seward, passed away Feb. 28, 2015, at home. Born Nov. 13, 1932, in Johnstown, son of Donald and Ora (Whited) Currie. Preceded in death by parents and beloved brothers, Wayne “Dutch” and David “Bud.” Survived by loving wife of 57 years, Rae Ruddell (Dishong) Currie; loving daughters, Linda Raye, married to David J. Edwards, Seward; Lisa Rae, married to Shawn E. Kurtz, Vinco; and Lori Rae Currie, married to John, West Virginia; grandchildren, Melisa Lynn Edwards, and fiance, Lee T. Barbus; Haley Raye Kurtz; and Nathan David Edwards; brothers, Jerry Currie, married to the former Barbara Ochenrider, Cramer; and Thomas Currie, married to the former Debra Jones, Charles, Pa.; sister, Patricia, married to Robert Shaw, Cleveland; and sisters-in-law, Arlene (Krebes) Currie, widow of David “Bud”; and Arlene (Dishong) Winters; also numerous nieces and nephews. Member of Armagh-Seward Presbyterian Church, where he served as elder. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, having served in a tank battalion guarding Fort Knox. Ray worked in area coal mines all his career. Member of Union Local 1257. Ray loved working in the mines. Life member of Seward Volunteer Fire Company. He drove the fire truck for many years on fire calls and in parades and drove Santa around Seward at Christmastime on the fire truck. Member of BPOE 175 Johnstown Lodge, where he served as trustee and tiler; and Sandy Bottoms Sportsmen’s Club. Ray’s family was always the light of his life. He was always willing to give a helping hand to anyone in need and treasured his friends. He plowed snow for many years for his community and mowed the ball fields. Ray enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and traveling, especially trips to Canada and out west. He spent many hours cutting out decorative items with his scroll saw. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Jon A. Meese Funeral Home, Seward, where funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, the Rev. Rick Corbett, officiating. Private interment, Armagh Cemetery. Elks ritual service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
